Ureter Stone Removal in a Rabbit

Our team is dedicated to advancing the field of exotic animal medicine by pushing the boundaries and exploring new techniques to provide the best possible care for our patients and save as many lives as possible. This case is an excellent example to illustrate this effort. A 6-year-old female rabbit called Toto 桃桃 developed a stone in her urinary tract that blocked the ureter and prevented the urine from leaving the kidney. The build-up of urine caused lots of pain and led to a condition called hydronephrosis.

This disease could have been a death-sentence for a rabbit a decade ago. These days however we could diagnose her condition with a CT scan and remove the stone from her ureter with an extremely delicate microsurgical procedure. The diameter of the ureter was only 7mm, and we had to open up this tube, extract the stones and suture the ureter closed to prevent urine leakage but without causing any significant narrowing. If the ureter develops a stricture due to scarring after the surgery, the urine flow will be compromised again. Luckily, the surgery was performed without complications. Three months after the surgery Toto rabbit is doing well and her last blood test showed no kidney problems!
