Fi Fi came to us when she was 8 months old with a fractured elbow. Radiographs revealed that her elbow had broken into 3 pieces. To add to the complexity, her joint surface was involved. The elbow joint is unique, as it has major nerves and vessels in the proximity. Fi Fi only weighed 2.3 kg, and her delicate bones, which could further break during surgery, made the fixation procedure extremely challenging.
Dr Elaine, our veterinary specialist in Canine and Feline practice and RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery, operated on Fi Fi. After 12 weeks, Fi Fi returned for radiographs to assess her progress. Radiographs revealed the bones have healed. Now she is planning to travel around with her buddy again!
Small and toy breed dogs are more prone to limb fractures because their bones are smaller and more fragile. Diets may also play a role. Jumping from furniture or from an owner's arms and landing incorrectly is the most common cause. We are one of the few veterinary hospitals in Hong Kong that are equipped to handle complex orthopaedic surgeries, and we look forward to helping you and your pet live the best life they can!
